PENN STATE RECEIVES AWARDS IN STATE RECYCLING CHALLENGE The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) recognized Penn State's recycling efforts as DEP concluded its RUSH to Recycle Challenge. Penn State was one of nineteen Pennsylvania colleges and universities to participate in the October 7-November 30 competition. DEP Secretary David E. Hess announced the winners on December 15. Penn State-University Park won first place for Most Overall Recyclable Material (a Special Honorable Mentions category) collected during the entire Challenge period. Over 429 tons, or 859,040 pounds, were collected at University Park as part of the challenge. In the category of Existing Recycling Programs, Penn State's Wilkes-Barre campus won third place for Highest Total Average Pounds per Students Adjusted collected for the entire period including baseline. That campus had a total of 34,39 average pounds per students adjusted. Also in the category of Existing Recycling Programs, Penn State Wilkes-Barre and Penn State-Harrisburg Campus received honorable mentions for Greatest Percentage Increase over Baseline. Wilkes-Barre Campus saw a 40% increase and Harrisburg Campus had a 9% increase over baseline. "Penn State was proud to be a part of the first Rush to Recycle program," commented Ford Stryker, Office of Physical Plant Deputy Assistant Vice President. "This is an excellent program and it definitely increased awareness about recycling and environmental issues among the students, staff and faculty."
