UNIVERSITY'S RECYCLING EFFORTS HONORED BY STATE

The Penn State recycling program was honored last week for its results in last fall's statewide "Rush to Recycling" contest run by the Department of Environmental Protection. Penn State won first place in the category for the most overall recyclables collected, with 429 tons. The competition included 19 Pennsylvania institutions and ran from Oct. 9 to Nov. 30. Carnegie Mellon University came in second with 143 tons and Villanova University placed third with 101 tons. The challenge pitted colleges and universities across the Commonwealth against one another to see which school could increase its recycling the most. Penn State will use the $1,500 in prize money to purchase outdoor recycling collection bins to expand and diversify the existing program. Al Matyasovsky, coordinator of the campus recycling program, says that the challenge "led to several colleges and universities developing or expanding their recycling initiatives, and that is great for the environment."
