The strategic plan organizes F&B’s direction and overall vision. It establishes the groundwork for the next five years, so that F&B can move forward fully aware of its mission, values, goals, and other areas of focus.

Creating the present plan involved a significant communication plan that aimed to expose the planning process to F&B employees and to encourage awareness, as well as providing opportunities and channels for feedback. Through several meetings, which included both F&B leadership and management, the plan was developed through brainstorming and conversation between representatives from all offices and campuses within F&B and beyond.

Our mission defines the reasons why our organization exists. It’s the foundation upon which the rest of the strategic framework is built.

Mission
Finance and Business is a service organization that supports Penn State students, faculty, staff, and the public. We are responsible for the planning, management, and stewardship of the University’s human, financial, physical, and environmental resources.

The vision goes beyond the mission to communicate to employees and the world what the organization aspires to become. Two primary benefits of a vision statement are to motivate employees and to make sure that they’re all guided by the same principles. These principles must reflect the values and beliefs of the organization or they’ll be seen as hollow platitudes.¹

Responsible Stewardship
• Ensures that Penn State’s resources are maintained professionally and appropriately for years to come.
• Successfully planning the use and development of all physical assets.
• Ensuring the fiscal and physical integrity of Penn State.

Values provide boundaries and express how we want to operate as an organization in achieving our vision. They are an expression of major concepts that are important to each of us – individually and collectively.

Values
Accountability – We are committed to “owning” our work and to serving our customers. We understand that we revel in our successes and are responsible for our shortcomings. Accountability drives our commitment to quality improvement of F&B and each of its offices, and confidently accepting tasks to enhance customer service.

Customer Service – Combining communication, creativity, and hard work to surpass customer expectations. Customer service is the center point of why F&B exists and we are dedicated to always looking for ways to support our customers more effectively.

Excellence – This is the target we are trying to achieve in all of our work. We strive to perform at a level that provides outstanding and innovative services from all parts of F&B.

Integrity/Ethics – Creating an accountable, honest, dedicated, and professional working environment for all. This includes “saying what you mean, and meaning what you say,” and establishes credibility for all members of Finance and Business.

Respect – Honoring the diverse experiences, gifts, and knowledge that every person brings to the table. Respect is deserved, not earned, and is the core of how we deal with each other and with whom we all interact.

Teamwork – We recognize that our success is inevitably tied to others, and that our performance as a team will define us. We look to successfully partner with others to provide the highest quality service through customer-and coworker-friendly processes.

Student Centeredness – Keeping student perspectives, opinions, and safety at the center of every decision that we make as an organization. We strive to help Penn State achieve student centeredness in every facet of its operation.
